CROSS-CULTURAL TAPESTRY: ASVATI INTERIOR
"Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A new year brings new beginnings and Woodstock just became a little richer with the opening of Asvati Interiors.
Picasso Cushion Cover - R350
Malawi Chair - R1150
Woodstock is a place that is forever changing and evolving. It creates a vibrant atmosphere and a kaleidoscope of opportunities that is best experienced when exploring by foot. Only a stone throw away from the Old Biscuit Mill lies this quaint boutique-style shop that speaks of a love for texture and textile.
Bohemian Cushion Cover - R390
Having met Ighsaan shortly after the shop's opening at the end of 2018, it became clear that his love for travelling to exotic locations became a clear reflection of his selection and curation of interior decor.
Mudcloth Chair - R3500
Delicious Monster Plant - R290
What struck me most is the bold use of pattern and texture. This is perhaps what interior trends sparked last year when the marriage of opposing motifs somehow became 'okay' and that consumers started challenging their own design ideas.
More than just the handmade, the inclusion of natural elements are very exciting. There has been a revival of house plants as an extension of home decor and an appreciation of the organic.
Rialheim Rhino - R399
Midas Egg - R490
There is however also a touch of stillness and composure in many of the more sculptural elements - geometric shapes and solid black figures creates a harmonious balance between the more traditional textured items and contemporary art.
My favourite item by far is the organically shaped, woven gourd baskets. Handmade and imported, these items illustrate the craftsmanship and skill of the Zimbabwean artisans.
Armchair - R4800
Apart from travelling regularly to source new material, Ighsaan also has a love for restoring furniture items and giving it new life with local textiles, as can be seen in the armchair with abstract dandelion print.
Rialheim Nicola Jug - R199
Kilim Cushion - R350
Rialheim Dreamweaver Bowl - R599
Asvati has brought a fresh, dynamic approach to the interiors of Woodstock. What should be appreciated is the balance between the contentious support of local suppliers and the introduction of foreign craftsmanship.
